Food Safety Division
The Food Safety Division of the Health Sciences Authority was established to provide regulatory support to government agencies and protect the community from chemical and radiation safety risk in the food supply.
It serves as the reference laboratory to the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore to ensure the safety of food in Singapore. As an integral part of the government's food control programme, the laboratory provides prompt and efficient service for the enforcement of the Food Act and Regulations. In addition, the Food Safety Laboratory also provides testing services to support food export certification. The laboratory has attained the ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation under Singapore Accreditation Council – Singapore Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (SAC-SINGLAS) since 1997.
Food Safety Laboratory
The Food Safety Laboratory deploys a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art instrumentation for developing specialised analytical service in the field of food safety and water safety. These testing services are supported by a team of scientific experts with in-depth knowledge on both current and emerging regulations. It specialises in testing for contaminants which occur naturally, e.g. mycotoxin; contaminants from the environment, e.g. organic/inorganic pollutants; contaminants migration from food contact materials, e.g. Bisphenol A, contaminants from food processing, e.g. 3-MCPD etc as well as food authentication e.g. honey. It also conducts investigations, surveys and research activities pertaining to food quality and safety.
Internationally, the Food Safety Laboratory is recognised as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Food Contamination Monitoring. We regularly contribute food contamination data to the GEMS database. This provides useful information for WHO to assess the global trends to reinforce food safety for consumers. In ASEAN, the Food Safety Laboratory is also designated as the ASEAN reference laboratory on mycotoxin providing consultancy, training and annual proficiency tests to the national laboratories in ASEAN countries.
