The advent of DNA profiling methodology in 1985 has had an enormous impact on the ability of crime laboratories to uniquely identify individuals by testing a variety of samples. Since then, the combination of incorporating modern genetic and molecular biology techniques by crime laboratories and the establishment of national DNA databases has resulted in greater success in the identification of criminals. Equally important and relevant, the power of DNA profiling has also been applied to exonerating the innocent, a role first demonstrated in the United Kingdom in 1985 in the world’s first use of DNA profiling in crime investigation. In addition, DNA profiling is also useful in resolving un-established paternity, and in identifying the remains of missing persons or victims of mass disasters.
The Biology Division @ Health Sciences Authority comprises the DNA Profiling Laboratory (Outram), DNA Profiling Laboratory (Synapse), and the DNA Database Laboratory. At the Biology Division, we provide a one-stop DNA testing service for law enforcement agencies to examine exhibits for biological material, determine DNA profiles, and identify individuals.
DNA Profiling Laboratory
The DNA Profiling Laboratory was established in 1990. The primary function of the laboratory is to examine biological evidence for criminal investigation. It also conducts DNA parentage and kinship analysis and offers consultancy in forensic DNA analysis and database management.
DNA Database Laboratory
The DNA Database Laboratory was established jointly with the Criminal Investigation Department of the Singapore Police Force. Launched on 14 February 2003, the Laboratory is responsible for the administration, operation and management of the national forensic DNA Database in Singapore.
The DNA Profiling and DNA Database Laboratories are the only forensic DNA laboratories in Singapore accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB). State-of-the-art technology is used for examinations and all technologies are fully validated before application into casework to ensure reliable and quality results.
