The Pharmaceutical Laboratory provides testing services to the general public, as well as the hospitals, clinics and traders in the pharmaceutical and health product industry.

We are the reference laboratory to the Health Products Regulation Group, Health Sciences Authority to ensure the quality and safety of western drugs and traditional medicines in Singapore. Our laboratory not only offers analytical services to help the industry meet their regulatory responsibilities, we also serve the Singapore Police Force , hospitals and clinics.

Since 1993, the laboratory was established as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Drug Quality Assurance to review monographs for the International Pharmacopoeia and assess test procedures and technical articles for WHO. The laboratory also assists WHO Collaborating Centre for Chemical Reference Substances to validate international reference standards and is a training centre for pharmaceutical analysis and advanced instrumentation.

The laboratory is involved in collaborative ASEAN project to establish pharmaceutical reference standards for the ASEAN countries. Stringent tests are performed by member countries on candidate materials before they are formally adopted as ASEAN reference standards. So far, more than 181 such standards have been produced for the region.

In 2009, the laboratory was designated as a WHO Prequalified Quality Control Laboratory in Pharmaceuticals under the WHO Prequalification of Medicines Programme. We are proud to be a part of the international team of laboratories that ensures standards of quality in medicinal products procured by United Nations (UN) agencies. These products are used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and in ensuring reproductive health. Together with other laboratories worldwide, the Pharmaceutical Laboratory helps to ensure unified standards of quality, safety and efficacy in these products supplied under various UN programmes to countries around the world.
