Current activities include the following:
- Development of new monographs for the international Pharmacopoeia in areas relating to chemical analytical procedures;
- Regional training centre for instrumental analysis of pharmaceutical preparations and good laboratory practice;
- Laboratory examinations of candidate reference materials and replacement of batches of international chemical reference substances.
World Health Organization (WHO) Prequalified Quality Control Laboratory in Pharmaceuticals
In 2009, the laboratory was designated as a WHO Prequalified Quality Control Laboratory in pharmaceuticals under the WHO Prequalification of Medicines Programme. We are proud to be a part of the international team of laboratories that ensures standards of quality in medicinal products procured by United Nations (UN) agencies. HSA joins other laboratories worldwide to provide analytical testing services of priority products for treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and in reproductive health to UN agencies. This will help to ensure unified standards of quality, safety and efficacy in these products supplied under various UN programmes to countries around the world.

ASEAN Reference Substances are established as part of the regional cooperation among the ASEAN countries to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of pharmaceuticals in the ASEAN region. These standards are validated in the national laboratories of the ASEAN member countries and are formally adopted after stringent qualitative and quantitative tests are carried out the candidate substances. So far, more than 181 such standards have been produced for the region.
