Complementary Medicines: Herbal Medicines & Health Supplements

Herbal medicines refer to traditional Chinese medicines, Jamu, Ayurvedic medicines and any other medicines of herbal origin.

Testing services include:

• Screening for Common Poisons

Herbal medicines and health supplements may contain western drug adulterants and toxic substances, which may be harmful if consumed. The Laboratory makes use of advanced instrumentation, such as HPLC, GCMS, LCMS and LC tandem MS to screen for the presence of these substances. Tests can be customised to suit different product indications e.g. slimming, sexual enhancement etc. A comprehensive list of Common Poisons has been accredited by SAC-SINGLAS.

• Heavy Metals Analysis

Toxic heavy metals may be present in herbal medicines and health supplements. It is important to ensure that they do not exceed the permissible limits. The Laboratory provides tests for Mercury, Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium and Copper.

• Screening for Natural Substances


The Laboratory provides the screening for natural substances, including Artemisinin, Aconitine, Berberine, Ephedrine, Lovastatin, Tetrahydropalmatine, Solasodine & Solanidine, Methoxsalen, Lobeline, Colchicine, Bufotenine and Aristolochic Acids. Please contact us for more details.

 • Aflatoxins Analysis

The Laboratory provides the analysis of Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 in herbal medicines. 


Western Medicines

Western medicines are tested for compliance with Pharmacopoeia (BP, USP, EP, IP) or manufacturers' specifications. The Laboratory performs tests on products in various dosage forms, including injections, infusions, tablets, capsules, cream, eye/ear drops, spray, ointments, lotions, tinctures, mixtures, emulsions, extracts and suspensions.

The Laboratory conducts a large variety of tests, including identification, assay, dissolution, disintegration, related substances/chromatographic purity, water content, melting point, tablet hardness, loss on drying, loss on ignition, optical rotation, pH, refractive index, uniformity of dosage units, uniformity of weight, gravimetry and extractable volume.
