Highlights on the New Health Warning Labels
The Smoking (Control of Advertisements & Sale of Tobacco) (Labelling) (Amendment) Regulations 2006 will come into effect on 1 August 2006.
Health Warning Labels must:
- Be printed clearly and conspicuously on the package
- Occupy at least 50% of the total area surface of the package on which the warning is printed
- Be positioned parallel to the top edge of the package, towards the top part of the package and in the same direction as the other information on the pack (except for cigarette soft packs)
- Be displayed in a manner that ensures that none of the warning will be severed, obliterated or becomes unreadable when package is opened in the normal way
- Be rotated with equal exposure over 24 months from the effective date of implementation
Additional Warnings to be Printed on every Container of Cigarettes:
- The nicotine level expressed in tenths of a milligram per cigarette
- The tar content expressed in milligrams per cigarette
- The words "NO SALE TO PERSONS UNDER 18"
Technical Specifications:
- The background colour shall be 100k black box
- For the text "Warning":
- Typeface TradeGothic Bold
- Colour 100m100y/Pantone Red 032
- Rest of the text:
- Typeface GillSans
- White colour
- The resolution for all images shall be a minimum of 300dpi. All manufacturers, importers and wholesalers of tobacco products are strongly encouraged to purchase copies of the Smoking (Control of Advertisements & Sale of Tobacco) (Labelling) (Amendment) Regulations 2006 from:
