NEW CHAIRMAN APPOINTED TO THE BOARD OF THE HEALTH SCIENCES AUTHORITY
Professor John Wong Eu Li will take on the appointment of Chairman of the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) from 1 January 2012. Professor Wong, Isabel Chan Professor in Medical Sciences, is the Vice Provost (Academic Medicine) of the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also the Deputy Chief Executive of the National University Health System (NUHS), and Director of the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS).
2 A medical oncologist-haematologist by training, Professor Wong has made important contributions to medical education in Singapore, having served as Dean of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He has been actively involved in the development of Biomedical Sciences, and the establishment of Singapore's first academic health system linking NUH and the NUS medical, dental, and nursing schools under one unified governance structure.
3 Professor Wong succeeds Professor Edison Liu, Executive Director, Genome Institute of Singapore, as Chairman of the HSA Board. Professor Liu's term ends on 31 December 2011 after five years of distinguished service.
4 Professor Liu joined the HSA Board in 2006 as Deputy Chairman and was appointed Chairman in 2007. Under his visionary chairmanship, HSA has been inspired to make significant strides in becoming an internationally renowned scientific and regulatory authority. He has worked closely with HSA's leadership to strengthen the organisation's scientific rigour and capacity as a trusted and responsible regulator, while transforming and integrating its structures and processes to become more efficient and enterprise-oriented.
5 Under Professor Liu's watch, HSA has extended and strengthened its network of international and local partnerships and collaborations. HSA is now closely affiliated with leading overseas counterparts, and many of its competencies have attained global standards. This participation has given HSA and Singapore many opportunities to be a leading voice in international developments in health products regulation, blood-banking and transfusion medicine, forensics and the analytical sciences.
6 The Ministry of Health and HSA would like to express our sincere appreciation to Professor Liu for his invaluable contributions and wise mentorship over the past five years. We extend to him our very best wishes as he takes up a new role in the USA next year as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jackson Laboratory. We also warmly welcome Professor Wong to the HSA Board and look forward to his guidance and counsel in setting the policies and directions for HSA in the years ahead, as HSA continues to serve the nation in ensuring safer and healthier lives and develops into a leading organisation for scientific and regulatory expertise in health sciences.
