Singapore's Health Sciences Authority (HSA) signed a Cooperation Agreement with the International Criminal Police Organization-INTERPOL on 8 June 2011.
This agreement, inked by Mr Ronald K Noble, Secretary General of INTERPOL, and Dr John Lim, Chief Executive Officer of HSA in Singapore, aims to enhance existing co-operation between the two agencies by creating new opportunities in strengthening the training in the investigations and testing of counterfeit medical products for law enforcement officers.
Said Dr John Lim, “HSA is pleased to formalise our cooperation with INTERPOL and play a part in the global efforts against counterfeit medical products. Tapping on our unique blend of regulatory and forensic expertise, we hope to be able to contribute by sharing our expertise and experience, and facilitate the effective information sharing and coordination of regulatory enforcement actions among partner agencies.”
Through the newly setup HSA Academy, HSA will work closely with INTERPOL to build up greater anti-counterfeit awareness and knowledge base as well as capabilities and skills sets for the Asia Pacific region.
Mr Noble remarked, “This training agreement with Singapore's HSA is historic because it is the first of its kind between INTERPOL and a national health agency. This signing reflects HSA's and INTERPOL's joint recognition that the fight against medical product counterfeiting and pharmaceutical crime is a matter that requires public health and law enforcement sectors to develop integrated approaches. Beginning in 2014 the INTERPOL Global Complex in Singapore will provide a key international platform for joint HSA and INTERPOL capacity building and training in this area.”
