A Dear Healthcare Professional Letter has been issued by Abbott Medical to inform healthcare professionals of the unrecoverable power loss and damage to HeartMate Mobile Power Unit™ (MPU) Module models 107758 and 107758UK. This issue is due to excessive static when the MPU module is connected to HeartMate 3™ Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS). HeartMate 3™ LVAS devices operating without the MPU module are not affected by this issue. There is currently a 0.2% worldwide complaint rate associated with these reports. To date, there have been two reports of serious injuries and no reports of death. Investigation of these reports have not indicated that the MPU Modules failed to meet manufacturing specifications. The Instructions for Use and Patient Handbook for HeartMate 3™ will be updated and Abbott Medical field personnels will be performing relevant trainings at all sites. Healthcare professionals are advised to contact all HeartMate 3 patients as soon as possible and inform them on the recommendations to prevent excessive static electricity. Please refer to the letter for details.
Only abstracts of the Dear Healthcare Professional Letters (DHCPL) are provided on this website.
