SynchroMed® II Implantable Drug Infusion Pump Models 8637-20 & 8637-40: Important Information Regarding Overinfusion

Medtronic International, Ltd. (Medtronic) would like to inform healthcare professionals of important information regarding overinfusion associated with the Medtronic SynchroMed^® II Implantable Drug Infusion Pump. Medtronic has detected an upward shift in reports of occurrence for overinfusion. Overinfusion may result in life-threatening events due to drug overdose and may also result in drug withdrawal syndromes due to emptying of the pump prior to a planned refill. Healthcare professionals are advised to perform verification checks on their patients implanted with the SynchroMed^® II Implantable Drug Infusion Pump; to always follow pump refill instructions, and to educate patients and caregivers on the signs and symptoms of drug overdose, underdose and withdrawal. Healthcare professionals are advised to refer to the letter for details.
