Detection of E-cigarettes and Accessories at Woodlands Checkpoint
On 23 August 2015 at about 12.30am, a Malaysian-registered car was directed by a checkpoint officer for routine checks upon arrival at the Woodlands Checkpoint. In the course of checks, the officer detected e-cigarettes and e-cigarette accessories in a bag placed in the car boot. Some bottles of the e-cigarette accessories were also found under the rear seat.
2. Upon thorough inspection of the car, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers also uncovered more sets of e-cigarettes behind the glove compartment and radio compartment. In total, the ICA officers seized 9 sets of e-cigarettes and 113 bottles of e-cigarette accessories.
3. The driver and passenger (both males; aged 34 and 26) are assisting with investigation. The exhibits have been referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA).
E-cigarettes are strictly prohibited in Singapore
4. Section 16 of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisement and Sales) Act prohibits the import, distribution, sale or offer for sale of any article that is designed to resemble a tobacco product; this includes vaporisers such as e-cigarettes, e-pipes, e-cigars and the likes. The public is strongly advised not to purchase or bring e-cigarettes into Singapore. The public should also refrain from using e-cigarettes and discard any e-cigarettes they have in possession. HSA encourages members of the public who have information on the illegal sales of e-cigarettes to call its Tobacco Regulation Branch at Tel: 66842036 or 66842037 during office hours (9:00am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday).
5. Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security. The security checks are critical to our nation’s security. The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands.
