HSA Alert: “Curalin Advanced Glucose Support” Recalled Due To Detection Of Prescription-Only Medicines For Diabetes
The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is alerting members of the public not to consume “CuraLin advanced glucose support” which was labelled to contain traditional herbs and tested by HSA to contain two undisclosed prescription-only antidiabetic medicines, glibenclamide and metformin.
2 LYC Nutrihealth (Singapore) Pte Ltd had imported two batches of the product. As part of HSA’s routine checks, HSA tested the product and found that both batches contain glibenclamide and metformin. HSA immediately directed LYC Nutrihealth (Singapore) Pte Ltd to stop all sales and recall both batches of “CuraLin advanced glucose support” that were imported from the United States of America and supplied locally (Batch: 2023-19650; Expiry 09/2026 and Batch: 2023-19651; Expiry 09/2026). The recall is ongoing.
3 The product was marketed to “help support healthy blood glucose levels”, “promote energy levels”, and “help support carbohydrate & fat metabolism”. It was sold by various sellers and on local e-commerce platforms including Shopee and Lazada. Please refer to Annex A of the pdf version for photos of the product.
4 HSA has worked with the local e-commerce platform administrators to ensure that listings of the affected product were removed.
Harmful effects from unsupervised use of antidiabetic medicines
5 Glibenclamide and metformin are prescription-only medicines for the treatment of diabetes mellitus and should only be used under medical supervision. The inappropriate use of glibenclamide or metformin without medical supervision may cause low blood glucose levels which can lead to seizures and coma. Other adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and cholestatic jaundice (a condition where bile flow is blocked or slowed down). Metformin can also cause lactic acidosis (dangerous build-up of acid in blood) that can be life-threatening. Diabetic patients who take “CuraLin advanced glucose support” together with their prescribed antidiabetic medicines are also at risk of overdose due to the additive effects of these medicines.
Advisory to consumers
6 Consumers are advised to stop consuming “CuraLin advanced glucose support” immediately. If you feel unwell after taking the product, especially if you have diabetes or have been concurrently taking other prescribed antidiabetic medicines, please consult your doctor.
7 There may be other batches or variants of “CuraLin advanced glucose support” being sold in the market. If in doubt, consumers should not buy or consume these products.
8 For returns of the affected batches of the product, please contact the retailer or seller whom you had purchased the product from. Advisory to sellers and suppliers
9 All sellers and suppliers must stop selling “CuraLin advanced glucose support” immediately. HSA will not hesitate to take stern enforcement actions against anyone who sells and supplies products found to be adulterated with potent ingredients. Sellers and suppliers are liable to prosecution and if convicted, may be imprisoned for up to 2 years and/or fined up to $10,000.
