HSA Raises Blood Donation Age Limit to 65 for First Time Donors
The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) will raise the upper age limit for first-time blood donors from 60 to 65 years old, effective 2 January 2026. New donors can give blood up to one day before their 66th birthday, while repeat donors can continue until age 75 (up to one day before their 76th birthday).
2 "Raising our donor age criteria reflects our commitment to ensuring a sustainable blood supply for Singapore's healthcare needs," said Adjunct Professor (Dr) Raymond Chua, Chief Executive of HSA. "With our ageing population, it is crucial that we tap into every safe opportunity to expand our donor pool while maintaining the highest safety standards for both donors and recipients."
3 HSA data based on donors up to the current age limit of 60 years old shows that adverse reactions decrease with age among first-time donors. This corroborates with findings from international studies. Increasing the upper age limit for first time donors from 60 to 65 years old will expand Singapore's donor pool as the population ages, ensuring the sustainability of the blood supply without compromising the safety of older donors.
Eligibility Requirements
4 To be eligible for blood donation, donors must be in general good health, free of infection symptoms, weigh at least 45kg, and meet minimum haemoglobin levels of 12.5g/dL for females and 13.0g/dL for males. Donors can download the DonateBlood mobile app on the Apple and Google App Stores to book appointments and reduce waiting time (see Annex for app download links).
5 Donors with well-controlled high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes may donate blood if they have no complications arising from their conditions. However, certain medication eligibility criteria may apply. For example, donors with high blood pressure are eligible if they require no more than two types of anti-hypertensive medications, while diabetic donors can donate if they do not require insulin. Potential donors can refer to the A-Z list on
www.hsa.gov.sg/donor_criteria to check if their medical conditions and medications affect their eligibility. They can also call 62130626 if their conditions are not listed on the website.
6 Potential first-time donors can complete the online quiz at
hsa.gov.sg/donor_criteria for a preliminary check of their eligibility before booking an appointment. Repeat donors aged 66 and above are required to undergo a medical check-up arranged by HSA to ensure they remain fit to donate blood.
Seasonal Low Collection Period
7 Year-end typically sees a seasonal drop in blood collection of up to 20%. Additionally, donors who travel to countries or regions with insect-borne diseases may be ineligible to donate for up to four months after their return, potentially affecting blood supplies in the coming months. Therefore, it is critical that eligible donors come forward during this period to bolster the supplies.
8 Maintaining a minimum nine-day blood stockpile is essential for Singapore's emergency preparedness, and every donation helps ensure the nation can meet both routine and emergency medical needs. Donors can book appointments through the DonateBlood mobile app (see Annex) or at
www.hsa.gov.sg/make_an_appt.
